It's truly a piece of junk. Constantly jams etc. Shakes like a pending earthquake. Noisy! Constantly stopping to "check itself" wasting 4-5 minutes each time. A real piece of crap. I so regret buying it. HP had the gall to offer me the chance to buy a another model with a modest discount. The one they offered is nothing but a cheaper version of the same unit. I will never again buy a product with HP on it.

I've spent probably 50 hours trying to get my L7780 to work -- most of it on tech support lines (they work with you for 3-4 hours and then hang up because they can't fix it). I've hired two techs and contacted Best Buy's Geek Squad (where I bought it) and none of them can fix it either. Every time I get on the phone with HP it's a total insult to go through the same procedures again -- and after calling continuously for a year for help -- I found out the warranty just expired so now they won't do anything at all even after keeping me on the line for an hour before telling me that. Is there anything I can do? These people are positively evil!

Ummm... because:

a) The firmware fix didn't exist during the YEAR that I had the p.o.c printer

b) That "fix" is actually a "workaround"

c) That workaround breaks if you have to make changes to your router, or sometimes if you have power outages

d) That's only ONE of the problems I had with the 7780

All that said, thanks for the link.

After SEVEN L7780's that HP sent me (even though I assured them that a new machine would NOT solve a firmware problem), I never found a solution with them.

I ended up buying a Brother MFC-9840CDW (color, laser, all-in-one, duplex) which, btw, is on sale at Costco soon (I think the end of December).

I purchased the HP L7780 in January 2008. I'm on my third one and ready to call it quits! It's junk...

My latest 4 1/2 hour experience with the tech in India ended unsuccessfully, so he referred me to the "Level II" folks on the east coast where I thought I was going to get help solving the issues, but I was told, "I don't know much about the technical side". She intended to send be back to India for another, potentially hours long, exercise.

When I declined to jump through those hoops again, after losing hours and days of my life already, she offered to review my receipt for a buy-back. She was to get back to me by 11:00 am last Friday. I called back after 2:00 when I had heard nothing, but she had checked out for the day and wouldn't return until Monday. I didn't receive a call this morning either, so when I reached her there were lots of excuses and a generous offer of around $100 to buy this nighmare back. I declined, as the time to box it all up and haul it to the shipper again and wait for compensation, if it ever comes, isn't worth it.

Next step is to Staples where I bought it for $425, plus the three year warranty and all the ink and hired them to do the original install. I figure I'm in to this over $700 and hours of stress and lost work time.

Any ideas about what to buy that DOES work and has customer service that really is customer service?

Only 2 days? It's taken me over a month. The first month was spent emailing back and forth with a low-level technician in some foreign country who decided that it was a L7780 hardware problem...HP sent me a reconditioned printer. Of course I had the same problems. Today, after a 1.5 hour chat session, I know the real source of the problem. The AIO is working...for now. But I've paid for six weeks of a business lease on a useless machine. I'll be writing to HP.

Casico,

Yeah, right, I'm "full of it." Like I made all this up. Like HP *DIDN'T* tell me that there was a known incompatibility with the Linksys WRT54G and the L7780. Like they sent me money to buy a new router because the WRT54G works great. Like they sent me money to buy back my printer because it works perfectly.

Pu-lease.

Some day, humans will learn that just because you have a different experience, that doesn't automatically invalidate someone else's position, especially one as well-documented as this one.

For the fun of it, let's verify:

1) You have a Linksys WRT54G ?
2) You used the wireless networking wizard ON THE PRINTER? (not the setup from your computer, and not the setup where you connect a cable to the printer?)
3) When did you buy your L7780 ? (it's been a few months since this all ended, and for all I know they FINALLY upgraded the firmware... though I doubt it)
